Kala Wewa

This beautiful tank, Kala Wewa is situated in the North Central Province. You can reach here on your way to Anuradhapura (via Dambulla) by turning off at Kekirawa town.

Kala wewa was built by the King Dhatusena in the 5th century AD. In fact the King built another tank (Balalu) adjacent to this one and the two tanks are joined to form one of the biggest tanks in Sri Lanka (Kala - Balalu wewa)

There are many interesting places to visit close to this area. Some of the key places are mentioned below.
Aukana buddha statue - A standing buddha statue date back to the same period as the tank. The statue is situated by the side of the tank
• Jaya Ganga - An ancient canal that link Kala Wewa and Thisa Wewa of Anuradhapuara.

The above picture was taken from the bund of the tank, which I mentioned in one of my earlier posts.

The images of the sky and clouds can be seen clearly on the water. Just like a mirror.

What a beautiful scene. I really like the way you captured the reflection of the sky in the water.

Beautiful. I love the mountains in the distance and the clouds are wonderful.

Rainfield,
The clouds also were quite beautiful that day and the reflection on the water makes it even more interesting.

George,
Yep, the water is acting like a mirror and that made the scenery even more attractive.

Sunny,
I too like the mountains faraway!
Uusually this area is quite flat but we get one or two small mountains here and there and that makes the area very picturesque.

Thanks very much for your comments!

what a beautiful reflective surface. you can see so much beauty in this one shot: far off mountains, sky/ clouds, calm waters and the framing foliage. well done. hope all is well. have a great day.

Wow.. that's an amazing pic! Great angle too, for making the tank to appear almost like a mirror.

And thanks for the info on Balalu wewa. It's the first time hearing that name I think.. unless I've forgotten my history lessons. =D

That's a very peaceful looking lake, but I wonder what lurks below the surface of the water!?

Michelle,
Yep, it has all the ingredients for a good scenery! I too like the mountains faraway on top of water surface. Have a great day!!

Betsy,
Surely the reflection of the sky adds more beauty to the tank!

Chavie,
I love these sceneries and luckily we have plenty of ‘wewa’s all around the country.

Rosidah,
Glad to know that my posts reflect the tag line accurately :)
A wonderful week to you too!

Clo,
Yep I agree – It is peaceful and calm view for sure..
Wish you a nice day too!

Di,
You are most welcome :)

NicoleB,
Yes, Sri Lanka has a very long well articulated written history which dates back to 2500 years. So every place of importance has a story to come up with :)

Mommythecook,
Thanks for your compliments and they encourage me to do more and better posts :)

Harumi,
Yep Kala is the more prominent wewa. I too not sure whether they were joint during King Dathusena’s time or much later.

Photo Cache,
Yep, the sky was full of clouds, but it was a fine day.

Louise,
You are welcome and I really like banyan trees!

Lazyclick,
Glad you like it :)

Linnea W,
Good question!
Do not worry, no 'Nessie' sightings recorded so far here ;)

Thanks all for your wonderful comments!

lovely photo, the small twigs on the side of the photo really lift it to wondrous status.
I guess these lovely bodies of water are much used by the locals.

Kirigalpoththa said...

Glennis,
Yes, primarily the water is used for agriculture, beside you can see lots of people swimming and bathing in the wewa - locals as well as the visitors!
Many thanks for your comments!

Of course, the shot is beautiful. And the way it is framed makes one feel as if one is looking out into a secret realm. The muted colors add to the secretiveness.
Reading the comments and your commentary was interesting.

Amazing place indeed, I too have been here many times, check out my blog entry on it @ http://blog.kancando.com i have included how to get there, and a few pictures, and a video of the road and causeway. We actually went boating with the local fishermen which was rather fun, and something that we had not done before.
